One of Rob's earliest childhood memories is of sitting beneath the kitchen table trying to make a book using notebook paper, a yellow crayon, and a piece of red yarn. This was in Youngstown, Ohio where he was born into a family of Scottish immigrants whose lives were shaped by the industries of NE Ohio.

After high school, he went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree from Westminster College and Master and Doctoral degrees from Princeton.

His career path took him on adventures that would become the basis of his writing, and in 2006, he won the Robert Frost Award for Poetry. His poetry and several of his novels have been catalogued in The Library of Congress.
